The Secret of Rujak

The Secret of Rujak (2025) is a 3D AI-generated short film created entirely by Markus Matulessy, combining artificial intelligence, digital visual creation, and cinematic storytelling to introduce the culture and natural beauty of Maluku, Indonesia.

The film takes audiences through visually immersive representations of Maluku’s oceans, mountains, and beaches before turning its attention to something seemingly simple: rujak. Rather than presenting it merely as food, the film explores rujak as part of everyday cultural life, carrying connections to place, memory, and local identity.

Markus developed the project independently from concept to completion, shaping its story, visual direction, AI-generated imagery, and final edit. The project became an exploration of how emerging technologies can be used not only to create new visual experiences, but also to communicate local stories and cultural identity in contemporary ways.

Through The Secret of Rujak, Markus experiments with the intersection of culture and technology, using AI as a creative storytelling tool while keeping Maluku at the center of the narrative.
