Markus Matulessy is a filmmaker and emerging media storyteller from Maluku, Indonesia, whose practice explores how storytelling can connect cultural heritage, technology, and contemporary social experiences. Working across documentary and narrative film, 360° and virtual reality, interactive 3D environments, artificial intelligence, and virtual production, he is particularly interested in using new technologies to preserve and reinterpret stories rooted in place, memory, tradition, and identity. From documenting Cakalele in Hulaliu and challenging misconceptions surrounding cultural traditions, to experimenting with AI, Unity, Unreal Engine, and immersive media, Markus approaches technology not as a replacement for culture, but as a new language through which culture can be experienced, understood, and carried forward. His practice also extends beyond filmmaking into film education, community initiatives, and environmental engagement in Maluku, reflecting his belief that storytelling should not only represent where people come from, but also create opportunities for communities to participate in the future.
